While prehistoric woman was standing near fireplace, putting her one and only bony necklace on, modern woman stands in front of the mirror, considering whether...

...put on her coral necklace, or glass one, or to choose her silver set with cut stones.

The term jewellery is related to practically any petty accessory without utility value which people have been wearing since prehistoric times for decoration. Origin of jewellery can be found in protective amulets which prehistoric people wore on themselves and which used to be made of wood, shells, stones, teeth and bones (well, even enemies´ skulls gave strength to fighter). So-far the oldest finds of decoration were discovered on the place of ancient Sumer and Egypt. For hundreeds years had been as the most frequent materials used glass and metal (iron, copper,  tin, bronze, silver), aristocracy used as a decorative element gold with inset gemstones. A term jewel appeared for decoration made of gemstones. It took several thousands years since the animal need of protection against evil powers have been replaced by desire to decorate ourselves in order to increase our personal grace and self-confidence.

How to care about jewellery

Keep in mind that jewellery is a decoration, not usable goods. Keep the basic rule concerning its wearing – PUT THE JEWELLERY ON AS THE LAST THING AND PUT IT OFF AS THE FIRST THING.

Above all it should be protected against following negative factors:

  1. Mechanical action – tearing, stretching, curving, e.g. during sport, ripping due by some spike, jewellery made of textile could be cut off. Be careful during hair combing... This category includes also damages caused by single tension in a long term, e.g. friction of metal bracelet against table during typing on PC keyboard.
  2. Chemical action - (metal and plastic parts are mainly concerned) – all cosmetical skin and hair ingredients, agressive sweat. In no case go to hairdresser with jewellery on.
  3. Fyzical action – – light, dust, humidity, water, or intensive hot (e.g. sauna). Majority of metal jewellery parts is galvanized and light incidence has got a destroying effect especially on silver galvanization. Some components (e.g. wires) are varnished and if dust settle on them for a long period, their surface will darken, they will get affected and they may even get rusty.

Remember from the above mentioned following advice: do not expose jewellery to these above mentioned influences or keep them on minimum. With jewels do not participate in sport activities, do not go to hairdresser, if you apply cosmetical or hair cosmetics, do it before putting jewels on.

Of course, put jewellery off before all procedures in which it could get in contact with water.

How to store jewellery?

Ideally in darkness and keep all influences on minimum. Experience has proved various types of jewellery stands, which should not be displayed on direct light incidence but sooner in some darker corner or in the cabinet. Jewellery boxes are ideal.

How to clean jewellery?

Above all – softly. The basic prevention means to keep all written rules for wearing and storing. Remove dust and sweat out of jewels with soft cloth (flanel is excellent). As the best appeared to be the soft tooth-brush, which can clean even hardly available places without using chemicals.
